What is Myofascial Release?

John F. Barnes Myofascial Release is a technique that uses gentle sustained pressure into Myofascial connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion. This slow gentle pressure, sustained for a long period of time works to elongate and release the fascia.

Anything from injury, inflammatory responses, surgery, and even emotional trauma can be stored in the fascia and cause restrictions that put great force on pain sensitive structures. These restrictions do not show up on many of the usual tests (x-ray, CAT scan, etc.) and can cause a lot of pain and confusion for patients and their doctors alike trying to discover the source of their discomfort.

What is Fascia?

Fascia is a specialized system of the body that has the appearance of a spider web. Fascia is a very densely woven covering that interpenetrates every muscle, bone, nerve, artery and most internal organs. It is one continuous structure from head to toe without interruption. This is why a restriction in the hips could present as knee pain.

How Can I Start My Healing Journey Today?

With Myofascial Release self care is a must! If you have lower back pain treating your psoas is a great place to start. This muscle connects to all of the lumbar vertebrae, then comes forward and down to connect to the femur. To access it, apply light pressure to the abdomen. Use this video as a guide and try it for yourself! Remember the principles of MFR use gentle sustained pressure over time so make sure to start off lightly and allow time to melt your pain away.
